About 2000 BC the Shang dynasty their were many gods that the people worshiped. You had gods that controled the weather, and also gods that ruled over the sky. Their was oe god that was belved to rule over all the othe gods this god was called Shang Ti. Ti means "Deity Above," or "the Lord on High." Ti brought great rewards to those that praised him and the ultimate punishment to those that offend or disobyed him. Ti had a royal court made up of all of the worthy ancestors who had died. People living during the Shang Dynasty thought that their ancestors became god like when they died, and that their ancestors wanted to be worshipped too, like gods. Each family worshipped its ancestors. The people of this time thought that if theybrought their severnts with them to the afterlife. Then there life would be the same as it was on earth. this lead there servents to be sacrificed. An example of this would be when Count Wu, who lived during the Ch'in Dynasty (256-206 BC), ordered 66 people sacrificed at his funeral. Only important and onble chinese en were noticed as objects of worship. The poor were just forgotten. The Chinese saw worship not as an individual exercise. So this is why the poor could also benefit from ancestors worship. Priests did a number of jobs, from reading prayers to conducting sacrifices or funerals. Next we have an augar, an augur asked questions to the gods on behalf of humans. The Chinese developed the concept Yin and Yang. This is to conflicting in nature. The yin which is more female like was shown by dark and cold. An example of yin would be the moon. Yang which is more male like were hot and full of light like the sun.
